Why is the ceiling paint peeling?

2 min read

Q. Regarding one answer on removing sticky residue: Use what most households have on hand, either vegetable oil or olive oil.

Actually, I think any type of oil will work. I read this years ago and it works every time, even removing price sticker residue. Just apply a bit and let it soak in briefly, then wipe off.

Sometimes you may need to repeat. For the real question: Why do some of my ceilings’ paint peel?

A. 1. Wrong type of paint. (Not ceiling paint, which is lighter in weight than any other paint, including primer.)

2. Dirty, unsanded plaster. Wash and sand the plaster and peeling paint thoroughly.

3. Excessive amounts of paint, too heavy. Sand off such heavy paint.

In all cases above, after preparation: Apply two thin coats of white latex ceiling paint with a roller, then a brush to fill in edges. A reader once asked: How in the world can I apply thin coats with a roller filled with paint? I replied: Fill the roller by rolling it in the paint-filled part of the tray, then roll it on the dry side of the tray to remove about half. Apply the half full roller to the ceiling. Works every time.
