Senior Games set for June 17
The 2015 Senior Games, sponsored annually by Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging Inc., will be held June 17 at Waynesburg Central High School.
Three vintage planes from S.O.A.R. of Greene County will fly over during the opening ceremonies in a symbolic salute to the Senior Games. Pilots Fred Fehling and Chris Polhemus will fly Stearman PT 17 open cockpit bi-planes, with Polhemus pulling the 2015 Senior Games banner. The third pilot, Joe Zieglar, will be flying the “Smoke Hound,” an Acro-Sport Aerobatic Aircraft for special effect.
Competitive events are for individuals 50 and older who reside in Greene, Fayette or Washington counties, or who are members of senior centers within these counties. There is no charge for admission; however, there is a $1 registration fee for each competition. Medals will be awarded.
Events include the 50-yard dash, 1-mile walk, basketball toss, bocce, corn-bag toss, football throw, horseshoes, putting, shuffleboard, softball throw and stationary bike. In addition, there will be a PrimeTime Health Fair with information, health screenings and prizes.
Entertainment in the auditorium will include Ambassadors for Christ, senior comedian Darlene Garrett, Greene County Dulcimer Players and Dave Townsend. There also will be super bingo and food and craft booths.
Caricature artist Jeffrey Harris also will be on hand, and strolling performance artist Howard Mincone will provide juggling tricks.
Pennsylvania Lottery scratch-off tickets will be given to each person 18 years and older who visits the lottery table, and there will be several group lottery ticket drawings.
