Pumpkin Festival offers something for all ages

The Pumpkin Festival in Houston will celebrate its 32nd year Friday through Sunday.

The festival is the Houston Volunteer Fire Department’s largest fundraiser, with proceeds helping to replace equipment and vehicles.

The festival will open at noon Friday when the Chartiers-Houston High School marching band will perform. Games for children will begin at 1:30 p .m. at the main pavilion stage, and at 5 p.m., Supermoon Band will play.

Among the highlights on Saturday are a Costume Contest at the Heritage House, beginning at 8:45 a.m., with the parade on Pike Street beginning at 10 a.m. At 12:30 p.m., the Jason Craig Band will perform, and at 3:30, the eighth annual Pie-Eating Contest will be held in the large pavilion. At 4:30 p.m., the Justin Fabus Band will play.

On Sunday, the festival will begin with an open-air church service at 9:45 a.m. on stage. Entertainment will be provided from 1 to 5 p.m. by Shannon and the Merger Band. The seed-spitting contest will be held at 2:30 p.m. beside the main pavilion.

Some new items in the craft area include military dog tags, engraved stones, stuffed animal lamps, mustard and jellies, instant-print photo booth, handmade farm tables and chairs, stained glass, doll clothes, goat milk products, wooden jewelry boxes and button art.

There also will be food vendors, a children’s area with a petting zoo, pumpkin decorating, sand art and face-painting.
