Annual show to showcase orchids
The Orchid Society of Western Pennsylvania will hold its annual Orchid Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 19 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 20 at the Phipps Garden Center, 1059 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh.
Admission is free, although donations are appreciated.
A new feature this year is the repotting table, where visitors can watch their orchid plant being repotted. Cost is $5 per orchid and includes bark and a six-inch or less plastic pot.
The theme, “An Orchid Odyssey,” captures the journey of discovery. Visitors can glimpse the varied exhibits that feature hundreds of blooming orchids at their finest. Society volunteers and expert orchid growers will be available to answer questions.
The odyssey includes free educational seminars, plant raffles and sales by vendors from the eastern United States. Education classes will be held in the library at Philpps Garden Center as follows:
• 11 to 11:45 a.m. – “Growing Orchids at Home – Basic Culture for Beginners” by Georgene Albrecht.
• 1 to 1:45 p.m. – “Building and Expanding Your Growing Space” by Tim Choltco.
• 2 to 2:45 p.m. – “Repotting Your Orchid” by Demetria Marsh.
