Corporate wellness and fitness programs can make a big difference in employees’ lives

Do you know what some of the best-run, most successful companies in America have in common? It’s not just better employee benefits, working conditions and compensation structures.
Many offer something that makes a real difference in their employees’ lives – corporate wellness and fitness programs where employees can improve their level of health and fitness, pursue healthier lifestyles, prevent injury and participate in weight-loss and tobacco-cessation programs.
Wellness programs decrease absenteeism due to poor health, which translates into a more productive, efficient and engaged workforce. Plus, healthier employees represent better insurance experience that may result in lower premiums for your employees as well as your organization.
Here are some simple tips for starting a wellness program at work:
1. Start at the Top – Studies show that successful programs start with the executive level. The top level of your company needs to fully buy in to the concept that healthier employees are good for the bottom line.
2. Form a Committee – Find people who are passionate and driven in health and wellness in their own lives. These individuals will be your ambassadors and will help encourage their department and/or co-workers in participating. No one needs to be an expert here, just the movers and shakers!
3. Create a Culture of Wellness – Observe your workplace environment and recommend initiatives to create a wellness culture, including:
• Improving cafeteria/vending options
• Creating a tobacco-free environment
• Flexible work scheduling for regular medical & dental checkups
• Training staff to safely address emergencies
4. Invest in a “Know Your Numbers” Campaign – Encourage employees to address chronic disease risk factors by providing confidential screenings, whether it is a full lipid profile or just a start with blood pressure and weight. Becoming aware of your numbers is the first step to being ready for change.
5. Incentivize for Participation – Reward participants with incentives that are appropriate for your company. Gift cards, cash and recognition are all proven effective to gain participation.
Wellness is multi-dimensional. Regardless of whether you are starting a walking challenge, weight loss challenge, or planning educational seminars, what is important is that you are providing awareness and resources to your employees.
