Q: When should I have my first breast exam?

A: It is recommended at age 21

Q: How often should I have a breast exam by a physician?

A: For women aged 21-39, the performance of a clinical breast exam is recommended every 1-3 years. For women 40 years old and older, the exam should be performed annually. Getting a high-quality screening mammogram and having a clinical breast exam on a regular basis are the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early.

Q: How often should I perform self-breast checks at home?

A: It is important to have “self breast awareness”, which can only be achieved with self examination and noting the appearance monthly. This is easily done at the end of each menses or any day which is easy to remember. For instance, every 1st of the month.

Q: What should I look for in a self-breast check?

A: You should look for any visual changes to the skin of the breast and nipple, including any retraction or nipple discharge. Any redness or peeling of the skin. In palpation, you should look for what begins as a “pebble of sand”. The worrisome lumps are hard and fixed to the area. If you notice anything unusual during your self-breast check, call your health care provider immediately.

Q: Why is it important to have regular breast checks?

A: Breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women, affecting 1 in 8 during their lifetime. It is able to be found and treated early if women are diligent on being aware of any breast changes, attending their annual appointments, and participating in mammograms. Mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 for most women who do not have a family history of breast cancer. Early detection with screening mammography means that treatment can be started earlier in the course of the disease, possibly before it has spread. Results from randomized clinical trials and other studies show that screening mammography can help reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer among women ages 40-74, especially for those over age 50.
