The application deadline for the 17th annual Washington County Sister to Sister Summit has been extended to April 15. Girls who are sixth-graders are invited to participate, and young women in high school are invited to apply to serve as peer facilitators.

The summit is a free overnight “lock-in” that will begin at 7 p.m. April 20 and continue until 9 a.m. Saturday.

Part of an international series of Sister to Sister Summits, this overnight conference is sponsored and funded locally by the Washington branches of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Business and Professional Women and Washington Health System Teen Outreach, with support from Citizens Library and Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

At the summit, peer facilitators – young women from area high schools who receive training in the summit topics – will lead small group discussions and a variety of other activities to address critical areas of concern, such as dealing with peer pressure, decision making, creating positive friendships, body image, bullying, personal safety and self-defense, and dating and relationships. Team-building activities, “purposeful fun,” refreshments and ample sleep-time will round out the agenda. This year, the theme is “No Mean Girls.”

Facilitator and participant application forms are available at www.sistertosistersummit.org and are due by April 15. No late applications will be accepted. Facilitators must commit to attending both the entire summit and a required training session that will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. April 16 at the Washington Health System Teen Outreach center.

All participants and facilitators under the age of 18 must submit a signed parental consent form, also available on the summit website. Facilitators and women serving as adult chaperones must have all required state and federal clearances.

For additional information, contact summit co-coordinator Kathy Sabol, AAUW-Washington, at kathy@washcobar.org or 724-225-6710 or Dr. Mary Jo Podgurski, Teen Outreach, at podmj@healthyteens.com or 412-877-4906. Donations to support the Summit should be made payable to AAUW-Washington and mailed to K. Sabol c/o 119 S. College St., Washington, PA 15301.
