Local students receive backpacks, supplies at Stuff the Bus event

Thanks to help from First Federal Savings and Loan of Greene County each year, the United Way’s annual backpack giveaway comes at no cost to the nonprofit. Greene County United Way Executive Director MaChal Forbes said that her first Stuff the Bus event ran smoothly. The line of hopeful kids and their families waiting to board the school bus and select a backpack wrapped through Lions Club Park in Franklin Township Wednesday.

In its 16th year, the event provides local children with a backpack filled with school supplies. There is also free food, activities and library books for children.

More than 330 registered this year, Forbes said. First Federal Savings and Loan of Greene County sponsors the event each year. Flenniken Library in Carmichaels also distributed free children’s books. United Way board president Marilynn Bartley said she was thankful for those that assisted with Wednesday’s event.

“We appreciate all the help we’ve gotten from the community with this project,” she said.
