Dan and Lisa Johnson of 7 Young Road, Eighty Four, were named the 2017 Lovely Landscape Award winner by the Martha Washington Garden Club.

This is the 17th award presented since 1999.

Nominations are made by garden club members and anyone living in south or west Washington County.

A three-person committee reviews all the nominees and makes an award decision. The committee is chaired by Theresa Powell, who said judges visit each location, take pictures and talk with the owner.

Flowers

Gardens should be visible from the street. Dedication, originality of garden design and maintenance are part of the evaluation criteria.

An award sign is displayed in the garden for the year it is awarded.

Lisa presented an overview of the garden during the club’s fall meeting. The Johnson garden was created five years ago on the edge of their 214-acre farm.

In the spring, more than 130 varieties of irises and daffodils can be seen at the entrance of the long driveway to their home. Beginning in early June, more than 500 varieties of daylilies, as well as hosta and Heuchera, replace the spring blooms.

Wagon

At the top of the hill, they have a wagon upon which strawberries grow.

The garden is a family project, with their two children helping.
