One of my favorite ways to get exercise is to walk my dog,
but that’s not fun when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
How much exercise should we be getting, and what are some good ways for me and the dog to exercise indoors?
While it is currently recommended that people get approximately 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise five times per week, our four-legged friends need between 30 to 120 minutes per day based on their age, breed and size. While it’s good for both of you to get out and about in the neighborhood, indoor play can be just as beneficial when the weather isn’t great.
If you’re trying to exercise with your dog, you could run up and down the stairs, or set up an indoor obstacle course. Just make sure to be careful that no one trips! Also just like humans, utilizing a treadmill can allow a dog to get out some of that extra energy. If you have enough room inside, you can play fetch or a game of tug-of-war.
Playing with a laser pointer or hiding treats around the house, like behind the door or under a rug, and allowing your dog to seek them can be a fun activity that will keep him engaged and release some energy.
