In addition to revitalization, Burgettstown Area Community Development Corp. (BACDC) has taken on another task this summer.

“We’re focusing on providing meals to underprivileged children – kids who would otherwise be missing the mid-day meal at school,” said Luke Snatchko, BACDC president. “But we will feed anybody – the elderly, anyone who needs lunch. There are no qualifications. Just show up and eat.”

Snatchko’s organization was approached by Joyce Ellis, executive director of the LeMoyne Center in Washington, which provides free lunches at 18 locations throughout Washington County during the summer.

The LeMoyne Center will provide free meals, and BACDC will facilitate the distribution.

“We won’t turn anyone away,” said Snatchko. “The more, the merrier.”

For 10 weeks, from June 11-Aug. 18, meals will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Burgettstown Volunteer Fire Department hall, 1507 S. Main St.

This is the first such program in the northwest corner of the county.

State Rep. Jason Ortitay, R-South Fayette, helped secure a grant from Walmart Foundation that is being used for the purchase of a stove, refrigerator and freezer that will be used for the program.

“I think it’s a great idea,” said Ortitay. “Anytime we have a group of people willing to come together to make sure kids have a place to eat during the summer, it’s a home run. I congratulate them on putting it together.”

Now that the kitchen equipment is in place, Snatchko is looking for volunteers. He said this is a great opportunity for churches and other organizations to make a difference in their community.

The BACDC Outreach Committee will handle more substantial duties, but volunteers are needed daily for light meal preparation, serving and clean-up.

“I plan to ask organizations to sponsor a week, Monday through Friday, to send two or three people,” said Snatchko. “They can give presentations. There are no strings attached. They can do whatever they want to do.”
