Amid all the preparation for Peters Township Community Day, parks and recreation director Michele Harmel is keeping an eye on possibility of precipitation Saturday.

“I’ll look every day until the event,” she said, and the odds so far are against the wet stuff. “It’s supposed to be hot, but I’ll take hot over rain.”

So be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen and plan to stay hydrated as the township presents its 40th annual summer extravaganza.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Peterswood Park, with a reprise for fireworks at 9:30 p.m. During the day, more than 170 booths will be open, featuring food, games, crafts, giveaways and vendors’ wares.

Rebecca Kanar, shown in action during Community Day 2017, returns with her balloons this summer.

Plenty of entertainment for guests of all ages is on the schedule, including a return visit by Joe King the Tree Carver, who transforms stumps into works of art using chainsaws. Also returning this year, from noon to 2 p.m., is Rebecca Kanar of ABC Balloon Twisting, who is nationally known for her innovative creations.

Other attractions include:

  • Trackless train by Boomerang Entertainment, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Bounce houses by Beringer’s Party and Event Rental, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Disc jockey by SoundWaves Event Group, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • WJPA radio broadcast, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., sponsored by Washington Hospital
  • Superhero and princess character visits, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., sponsored by Sun Chevrolet

  • One-man band Nick DiSanto, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Ray Ryan Riverside Band, 2 to 4 p.m.
  • Face painting by PGH Party Creations, 2 to 5 p.m.

At Peterswood Park’s amphitheater, a ventriloquist will perform at noon, and a “Hamiltunes” sing-along to songs from the Broadway hit “Hamilton” is scheduled for 1:45 p.m.

The organizing committee will have a raffle going all day at Shelter 1, with prizes awarded every five minutes.

Parking at Peterswood is limited.

“We try to encourage people to park at the middle school, if possible, because it gets pretty congested here,” Harmel said.

Shuttles will run regularly from the school, off East McMurray Road, to the park during the entire day. At the park, shuttles to various areas will be available.

Traffic on Meredith Drive is one way during the event, with vehicles entering from Bebout Road and exiting onto Froebe Road. Inside the park, Bruni Drive is reserved for vendors’ vehicles only, with a Community Day permit required.

When visitors return for the fireworks, no vehicles will be allowed to enter the park after 9:25 p.m.
