Waynesburg hosts suicide prevention walk
Waynesburg University has partnered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to host a walk to raise awareness Saturday.
Registration begins at 1 p.m. at the Marisa Field House and the opening ceremony begins at 2. The walk, a non-competitive 5K, is expected to last until 3:30.
Waynesburg University’s President Douglas Lee will address walkers during the opening ceremony and state Sen. Camera Bartolotta is scheduled to attend.
This is the first year the university is hosting one of AFSP’s signature Out of the Darkness Walk events.
“This will be an important campus-wide event to improve conversations around mental health, encourage help-seeking for those who need it, and support those who have experienced the traumatic loss of someone they care about to suicide. We also invite members of the local community to participate too,” according to the event website.
It’s free to walk and those interested can form fundraising teams. Dogs are welcome to participate.
Online registration closes at noon Friday. To register, visit https://www.afsp.org/waynesburg. Anyone interested in participating can also register in person the day of the walk. Donations will be accepted until June 30. There will be bead necklaces that have special meanings for suicide prevention, customizable buttons, wellness activities and information available.
