For close to 40 years, SPHS Aging Services has set aside one day to show its appreciation to hundreds of volunteers who serve senior citizens throughout the Mon Valley. This year’s event, sponsored by SPHS affiliate agency Diversified Human Services, will feature a dinner to honor volunteers to be held at the Stockdale Fire Hall on May 18. Doors open at 3 p.m. with a dinner at 4.

The event is held to honor those who give their time to deliver noon meals daily to homebound seniors and those who work at the five senior centers in the Mon Valley.

Bob Weinstein, board president of Diversified Human Services, said the agency has nearly 1,000 volunteers who perform various tasks. These include delivering home-bound meals and working in the kitchens of the senior centers to those who present programs at the centers, such as line dancing, crafts, property tax and rebate programs, or plan the variety shows which benefit the home-delivered meals.

“Each volunteer receives a small gift as a token of our appreciation. It is a way for us as a program to recognize our volunteers that day,” Weinstein said. “Our entire operation revolves around our volunteers. Without them, our senior centers could not operate and we could not provide more than 500 home bound elderly with a hot meal, Monday through Friday. They make it all happen.”
