I always hear about the cardiovascular and general health benefits of exercise, but my doctor just suggested that I try to engage in a more consistent pattern of exercise to help with anxiety. How can this be beneficial?

Having a consistent workout schedule can help in a variety of ways. For starters, exercise releases endorphins, which create feelings of happiness. This can help those that suffer from depression, anxiety, or are just feeling down. It also increases concentrations of norepinephrine, a chemical that helps to moderate the body’s response to stress. This will not only reduce current stress, but also increase your ability to deal with stress on a daily basis. In addition, a good sweat session can help increase relaxation, and aid in sleep patterns. Some studies have even indicated that having a regular exercise schedule may be as beneficial as some medications in aiding relief from anxiety disorders. This may not be the case in all instances, but working with your healthcare provider to incorporate a regular workout schedule can aid in your treatment of anxiety.

I used to be the most forgetful person. I started exercising about a year ago and have noticed that I don’t seem to be forgetting as many things. Is there a correlation?

Actually, yes! Studies have suggested that the parts of the brain that control memory and thinking have a greater volume in those that perform aerobic exercise. This is due to the fact that aerobic activity gets your blood pumping, which pushes more blood and oxygen to your brain. It reduces insulin and inflammation, while increasing the production of growth factors, which effect the growth of blood vessels. Aim for moderate intensity in your workouts around 150 minutes per week and anticipate to see results in about 6 months.
