The National Pike Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution presented awards in American History, Youth Citizenship, Good Citizen, Junior American Citizens and JROTC at a program held May 14 at Faith United Presbyterian ChurchWashington. The chapter honors students from Trinity Middle School, John F. Kennedy Elementary School, and Trinity and McGuffey high schools annually.

Boy Scout Troop 1103 from North Buffalo Church opened the meeting with a flag ceremony.

The JAC contest theme was “100th Anniversary of World War I – Service on the Homefront.” Students were asked to illustrate the ways Americans contributed their talents so its allies could win the war.

Students were judged on historical accuracy, adherence to topic, organization of material, interest, originality, grammar, spelling, punctuation and neatness. Sixth-grade first-place winners from John F. Kenney Elementary School included: Banner, group entry – Cameron Minnick, Benjamin Ondrejko, Benjamin Papson and Anand Karamcheti; Poster – Sydney McWreath; Stamp – Cole Evans; Poem – Katie Kastelic.

Trinity Middle School DAR Youth Citizenship winners were selected by the Trinity Middle School social studies department based on the DAR qualifications of honor, service, patriotism, courage and leadership as observed and evaluated by classroom teachers. Eighth-grade winners were presented with a medal and certificate. They included Taven Vernau, Claudia Cappelli, Alexandra Koffler and Savannah Ikach.

American History medals and certificates were given to the seventh-grade winners for Excellence in American History. Trinity Middle School American History winners were selected by the social studies department based on the DAR qualifications of academic achievement, motivation and personal interest in American history as observed and evaluated by the classroom teachers. Winners are Olivia Vettorel, Aiden DeWalt, Zachery Hair and Julia Luza.

DAR Good Citizen Award winners are Carly Croft, Trinity High School senior, and Emily Durila, McGuffey High School senior.

This year, an additional award was given through the National Defense committee. A military ball was held April 8 at the Hilton Garden Inn Southpointe, for Trinity High School JROTC students. National Pike Chapter awarded a bronze JROTC medal and certificate at the ball to Cadet Makenzie Diedrich, a senior at Trinity High School. On May 14, Makenzie was presented with an additional gift, thanking her for her service to the country. Upon graduation, Makenzie plans to attend Cedarville University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in pre-physician assistant.
