The 51st annual Book Sale of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) – Washington Branch will be held Friday through Sunday at Washington Crown Center during regular mall hours on Friday and Saturday, and ending at approximately 3 p.m. Sunday. Donations of new and pre-owned books will be accepted at the book sale site after 7 p.m. Thursday. Youth groups in need of a community service project or service hours are needed to help set up the book sale on Thursday night.

The specially-priced “Bag Full of Books Sale” will take place early Sunday afternoon.

The book sale has generated almost $66,000 over the years for the organization’s Returning Woman Scholarship, which is awarded to women who have returned, or who plan to return, to college full-time to finish a degree program. The scholarship complements AAUW’s mission to promote equity for all women and girls, lifelong education and positive societal change. As a nonprofit educational organization, AAUW strives to remove barriers and develop opportunities to enable women and girls to reach their full potential.

Scholarship amounts depend on the strength of the student’s application and available funds. Scholarship applicants must be residents of Washington County, be at or beyond the 30-credit level with at least a B (3.0) grade point average and demonstrate financial need. Applicants must be in the process of applying to the college of her choice or have already been accepted or currently enrolled. Nurses pursuing a college degree must already be a registered nurse. Based on the number and quality of applications submitted, candidates may be asked to participate in an interview with the scholarship committee. Applications are reviewed on a periodic, rolling basis; there is no deadline to apply. However, applications should be received at least 60 days prior to intended enrollment to ensure proper time for review and disbursement of the scholarship.
