Carmichaels students help bring clean water to Sudan
Seventh-grade students in Carmichaels Area School District will hold a “We walk so they don’t have to!” event Oct. 19 at the elementary track. Students will walk the longest distance they can while carrying gallon jugs of water, giving them a small experience of what millions of girls and women do every day in South Sudan. Reading the book “A Long Walk to Water,” about Salva Dut, who was forced to flee at age 11 during the Second Sudanese Civil War. Dut now provides wells to villages like his own, allowing girls to attend school instead of walking hours a day for dirty water.
