‘Roll’ models: Burgettstown kicks off anti-bullying initiative
They sailed over students and flipped over faculty, but the Dialed Action Sports Team BMX riders were at Burgettstown Area Middle-High School last week to do more than perform gravity-defying stunts. They were there to tell students that bullying is not cool, and that having a goal is.

Four middle school students and a BMX team member volunteered to have one of the Dialed Action Sports BMX riders jump over them during the team’s anti-bullying assembly.
The assembly was a part of the school’s anti-bullying initiative. By forming a giant peace sign, middle-school students kicked off the “Start With Hello” program that teaches skills to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness, and encourages students to reach out to and include those who may be dealing with chronic social isolation.
“We’re trying to keep students from feeling secluded,” said Melissa Ferencuha, Burgettstown’s dean of students.
The “Start with Hello” program is an initiative from Sandy Hook promise, an organization that aims to prevent gun-related deaths of children.
