A community dinner will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday in Fellowship Hall at Rogersville United Methodist Church. The menu will include creamed chicken and biscuit, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce and dessert. Dinner is free, but donations will be accepted. Carry-out is available. The South Fayette 38th Annual Festival of Bands will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at the high school stadium. In addition to South Fayette, marching bands from Avella, Avonworth, Bethel Park, Brownsville Area, Carlynton, Chartiers Valley, Fort Cherry, Hopewell Area, Obama Academy and Thomas Jefferson will perform. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors at the gate. Senior citizens with South Fayette Lion Pride Green cards (formerly Gold Cards) will be admitted free. The Fourth Annual Avella History Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Avella Volunteer Fire Department hall on Route 50. Doors open at 8 for exhibitors. Sponsored by the A. D. White Research Society, the event will feature local writer and historian Kathryn Slasor, who will discuss her new book of poetry, “Stepping Stones.” Copies of her book will be available for purchase. Craft vendors will be on hand and food service will be provided by St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Avella. Space is available for interested organizations. Fourth Presbyterian Church, 1000 Jefferson Ave., Washington, will hold its annual craft and vendor show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Lunch and baked goods will be available for purchase. For information, call 724-225-7243.

Jefferson United Methodist Church will hold a chili dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday at 310 Gill Hall Road, Jefferson Hills. Hosted by the Funding for Outreach Ministries Committee, the menu includes a bowl of chili (choice of beef or turkey) with a side of homemade mashed potatoes, choice of corn bread or roll, dessert and drink. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Children’s meals include a hot dog, mac and cheese, homemade dessert and drink. Eat in or takeout available. Proverbs 31 Quilt Guild will hold a quilt show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, 512 Second St., Brownsville. Food items will be for sale. Two raffles will be available as fundraisers for the guild’s projects: a queen-size quilt, pieced by Kathy Opel, and an original watercolor painting by local artist Bernard Spada. The guild donates quilts to local hospitals through Project Linus. So far this year, the group has quilted and donated 100 quilts.

St. Paul Lutheran Church’s 6th Annual Fall Craft and Food Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church located at 56381 National Road in Bridgeport, Ohio. More than 70 vendors will be set up inside and outdoors. The event, held rain or shine, will also include in an indoor food court, kettle corn on the lawn, and a chuck wagon with a variety of meats. Parking is free and there is no admission fee.

Peters Township Fire Department will kick-off Fire Prevention Month at its seventh annual house set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 245 E. McMurray Road, McMurray. Tour the fire station, meet the firefighters, check out the trucks and the fire safety house. Attendees can also test their skills in the Firefighter Challenge and watch a live vehicle rescue demonstration. The event will include free food, music and entertainment.

The Proverbs 31 Quilt Guild will host a quilt show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the sanctuary of Brownsville First Christian Church, 512 Second Ave. Tickets will be sold for a quilt that will be raffled off that day (winner need not be present), and also for baskets that will be displayed in an auction-type venue. Refreshments including sandwiches, desserts and drinks will be sold in the social hall. Admission is free. For information, call 724-785-2488.

Washington Camera Club will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 2 in Room 104, Courthouse Square. Lou Farkos will present his rescheduled program on “Fractile Photography.” It is also the final opportunity to turn in flash drives for the scavenger hunt contest.

Washington County Department of Parks & Recreation will hold the preschool program “Hey! It’s a Hayride” Oct. 2 and 3 at Mingo Creek County Park. Two sessions will be offered on each day: 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dress for the weather and take a hayride through the park. Afterward, warm up with a cup of cider. An autumn car cruise will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 3 at Schramms Market, 1002 Blank Road, Jeannette. Registration fee is $5 per vehicle. Dash plaques and goodie bags will be given to the first 100 vehicles. Proceeds benefit Transverse Myelitis Association. For information, call 724-744-7320.

The Washington branch of Dress for Success Pittsburgh will hold an open house from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 9 at 351 W. Beau St. Meet the team, volunteers, and tour the boutique. Guests will learn how Dress for Success Pittsburgh works to empower women in Southwestern PA. Light refreshments will be provided. Business women Melanie Colusci and Katie Mazzocco will teach participants how to take their business to the next level. There will be vendors, networking and a luncheon. A silent auction and 50/50 raffle will directly benefit The Global Sisterhood, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit that helps women and children across the globe.
