Zonta International was founded in 1919 in Buffalo, N.Y., with the mission of helping all women realize greater equality. Zonta is now a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. The organization has more than 30,00 members and 1,200 clubs in 67 countries.

In 1985, a group of 15 women formed Washington County’s Zonta Chapter. The chapter has since partnered with Washington County’s food bank, dress for success, literacy council and women’s shelters along with Washington City Mission and LeMoyne Center.

The chapter’s current project is to provide jogging suits to rape victims by partnering with Washington, Mon Valley and Canonsburg hospitals.

The organization also provides an annual scholarship to a junior from an area high school for their service to the community. As part of its Amelia Earhart Dinner, Zonta honors one junior from each Washington County high school for her community service work.
