A Youth Lock-In will be held from 7 p.m. Friday, March 8, to 8 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at Arise Christian Fellowship, 682 Broad Street, Washington. The event, open to local youth ages 11-18, will be held by youth leaders TJ Lindsay and Robert Fetty with other adults to help supervise. There will be games, prizes and fellowship, plus breakfast in the morning. Registration is not required, however, if a child has a food allergy parents are asked to call 724-255-8579 so caution can be used while preparing breakfast.
The Greene County Department of Recreation is teaming up with AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons) to bring an AARP Frauds and Scams Bingo class to Greene County residents. This version of bingo, which is free of charge, will educate on the topic of Frauds and Scams. AARP and Pennsylvania Banking and Securities will supply the prizes. Instructor Eileen Mazza, a member of the Consumers Issues Task Force, will lead the class that will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 6 at the Greene County Fairgrounds 4-H Building downstairs. A new library exhibit, Borderlands: Engaging in the Sonoran Border, will open at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 1, at Washington and Jefferson’s U. Grant Miller Library. Designed and built by students based on their experiences from a JayTerm travel course on immigration policy, enforcement and impacts on marginalized peoples and the environment, will include brief testimonies by students. Refreshments will be available. The exhibit should be on display through commencement.
The 38th Annual Duquesne Light Pittsburgh Home & Garden Show returns to the Pittsburgh Convention Center March 1-10. This year’s event will feature more than 1,800 exhibitors covering more than 10 acres, and include the new Farm to Table Eat Fresh! Buy Local! Feature Area. Tickets at $10 for adults and $4 for children ages 6 to 12 are available online at PghHome.com or at the Convention Center Box Office. Children under age 6 are free. Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer the preschool program “Shamrock Scrabble” on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 5 and 6, at Mingo Creek County Park. Two sessions will be offered: 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Participants are asked to meet at the Park Office to enjoy a St. Patrick’s Day snack and craft before heading out on a short hike to find fields of green clovers. An all-you-can-eat breakfast will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, at the Masonic Center, 44 W. Wheeling Street, Washington. The menu will include eggs, pancakes, sausage, bacon, home fries, juice, coffee and tea. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children age 5-12. Children under 5 are free. Enter through the rear door.
Pennsylvania American Water will host a customer appreciation event this weekend, March 2-3, at the Carnegie Science Center. All Pennsylvania American Water customers are eligible for a discounted general admission of $5 per person for up to four guests during the two-day event. PAWC is the sponsor of the real-time data monitor in the “H2Oh!: Why Our Rivers Matter” exhibit gallery, which presents data from river monitoring systems including temperatures, pH and water level from local rivers. There will be water-related activities and giveaway items. Customers must present a PAWC bill to receive the discounted admission. The reduced entrance fee is not valid with any other offer or group visits. Science Center hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
