Canon-Mac senior to sing opera classic with Washington Symphony Saturday
Maire Pasquinelli, this year’s winner of Washington Symphony Orchestra’s young artist competition, will be performing with the symphony in its “Back to Broadway” concert at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Pasquinelli will be the soloist on “O Mio Babbino Caro,” from the Puccini opera “Gianni Schicchi.” She competed against other student musicians and vocalists in Washington County to win the $1,000 that comes with being the symphony’s young artist competition winner.
A senior at Canon-McMillan High School, Pasquinelli participates in a number of the school’s music-related activities. She is in the concert choir, women’s ensemble, chamber choir, concert band and other groups. She has also taken piano lab, music theory and tutors students in theory and lead sectionals in concert choir.
“Music is what gets me through every day,” Pasquinelli said. “When I can’t get my mind off something, I compose. When I’m frustrated, I sing. When I’m stressed, I listen to music. I can’t imagine my life without it.”
“Back to Broadway” will also feature selections from hits from the Great White Way like “An American in Paris” and “Hamilton.”
The concert will be at Trinity High School.
