The Peters Township Democratic Committee has awarded its first Peters Township High School Scholarship to senior Nora O’Toole, daughter of Carol Ann and Kevin O’Toole.

She plans to attend Penn State University in State College in the fall, majoring in engineering. The $1,000 scholarship award will be applied to tuition, room and board at the university.

“Nora O’Toole has set the standard for leadership both inside and outside of school,” said Claudia Wagner, head of the selection committee. “This award is a testament to the type of scholarly, community and political leader our township needs. On behalf of the committee, we hope this scholarship inspires all students to continue their political and community engagement.”

Carolee Ketelaar, chairperson of the Democratic Committee, added:

“Nora’s service to our community, her involvement in political activities and leadership training, and her dedication to advancing solutions to climate change made her an outstanding choice to receive this year’s scholarship.”

She is a member of National Honor Society and treasurer of Peters Township High School’s Student Activists for the Environment program. In addition to her studies, O’Toole is an active community volunteer for Horses With Hope and Toys for Tots, and is a climate reality leader through former Vice President Al Gore’s Climate Reality Leadership Corps.

O’Toole was selected as the winning applicant for the PTDC Scholarship based on evidence of her commitment to the community, future goals and vision, general character and alignment with Democratic values.

The scholarship, the first one offered by the committee, was funded by donations made by community members and Peters Township High School alumni.

“We look forward to offering this scholarship in the years ahead,” Wagner said. “We’re proud and pleased to be able to offer a scholarship that demonstrates PTDC’s commitment to education, to the support of young people, who are the future leaders of our country, and to our values of lending a helping hand to fellow citizens.”

O’Toole was awarded the scholarship via an award ceremony video that the high school produced and has posted on its website. The committee has also announced the award of the scholarship on its website at peterstownshipdemocrats.com, its Facebook page, and in a mailing to its membership.
