Dine and donate event
The next dine and donate day for Mon Valley Paws will take place at La’Eda’s Restaurant, 1723 Grand Blvd., Monessen, on Sept. 29. La’Eda’s will share a portion of the sales from 4 to 8 p.m. with Mon Valley Paws. Mon Valley Paws volunteers will be on hand with a basket auction and to spread the word about MVP’s impact. Persons donating a pet food product will be entered into a drawing to win a Pet Supplies Plus gift card.
Pantry donations
Liberty Chapel Global Methodist Church, at 1330 Banetown Road, Washington, collects non-perishable food products for the Community Circle Food Pantry on the first Saturday of each month between 9 a.m. and noon. Donations will be unloaded upon arrival.
Association of University People
The Association of University People welcomes singles 55+ who are four-year college graduates to join for various activities and to meet new friends. Events include happy hour, brunches, lunches, dinners, meet-ups at live music venues, local wineries and walking trails, our unique book group and day trips. Those interested can attend three activities as guests before deciding to join. Chicken dinner
Liberty Chapel, 1330 Banetown Road, Washington, will hold a chicken and biscuit dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, to benefit missions and outreach programs. Participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food item, which benefits the Community Circle Food Pantry, Washington.
Garden club
Giant Oaks Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting on Oct. 1 at St. David’s, 905 McMurray Road. Lunch and the meeting will be at 11:15 a.m., with the program at 1 p.m. Speaker Candy DeBerry, PhD, a professor at W&J, will speak about “Vitamin G,” a term researchers use for the green space around us that provides essential mental and physical health benefits. She will focus on how green spaces, such as gardening, affect health and well-being. Guests are welcome to come to the lunch and program. The luncheon fee is $6 for guests. Church rummage sale
United Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will hold its annual fall rummage sale Oct. 1 through Oct. 3 at the church, located at 499 E. Malden Drive, Coal Center. Sale hours are scheduled as follows: Oct. 1: 4 to 7 p.m., Oct. 2: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Oct. 3: 8 a.m. to noon. Most items during the sale will be offered on a “name your own price” basis. Donations for the rummage sale are currently being accepted at the church during regular office hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are also needed to assist with sorting, setup and staffing throughout the event. Dine and donate
A Mon Valley Paws dine and donate event will take place the entire month of October (Thursday-Sunday) at Felicia’s Restaurant, 450 Schoonmaker Ave., Monessen. The spaghetti dinner includes salad, bread, meatballs and coffee or a soft drink. Call 724-314-6571 to purchase tickets. Service dog fundraiser
Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs will host its Pawtumn Bark-A-Que fundraiser from noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 3 at Quail Acres Pavilion in North Strabane Park. The event will feature a Cheplic’s pig roast meal, live music by The Next, pumpkin decorating and Chad Tyson of 102.5 WDVE as emcee. Proceeds will support the training and pairing of medical service dogs with veterans, first responders and civilians living with permanent disabilities.
Church Fall Fest
Calvary Church of the Nazarene invites the community to its fifth annual Fall Fest on Oct. 3 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 73 Promised Land Drive, Coal Center. The autumn celebration features a car show, craft and vendor market, family activities and seasonal concessions. The Fall Fest Car Show runs concurrently, with participant vehicle set-up scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. Vehicle entry is open to the public with a $10 suggested donation. The first 100 registered cars will receive commemorative dash plaques. Trophies will be presented at 3 p.m. across multiple categories. Alongside the car show, local artisans, crafters and vendors will showcase their products under the church picnic shelter. Vendor spaces are available for $20 each and include an 8-foot table under the shelter, though vendors may bring their own tables and outdoor canopies if preferred. Spaghetti dinner
Fairhill Manor Christian Church will host a spaghetti and meatball dinner on Oct. 3, 5 to 7 p.m. For $12, you will get spaghetti and meatballs, bread and butter, salad, a drink and dessert. Kids under 7 eat free. Take-out is available, and tickets can be purchased by calling 724-225-8610 or at the door. Fairhill Manor Christian Church is located at 351 Montgomery Ave. in Washington.
Cabbage roll supper
Saint Katherine Drexel Parish will hold its Sunday supper cabbage roll dinner on Oct. 4 at Drexel Hall, 208 Abromaitis Street, Bentleyville. The dinner features home-style cabbage rolls prepared fresh by church volunteers. Each $15 dinner includes two large cabbage rolls, mashed potatoes, corn, and a roll with butter. Dine-in service begins at 11 a.m., with meals available until sold out or 2 p.m. Take-out orders are also available, featuring convenient curbside pick-up. Early orders may be placed starting at 10:30 a.m. by calling 724-209-1370, extension 424. Quantities are limited, so ordering early is recommended. In addition to the main meal, optional mini desserts are available for $4 each, including chocolate cream mini pie and white almond raspberry mini bundt cake. Herbs of the Bible
From cilantro to saffron, discover how herbs and spices shaped cuisine, remedies and rituals from ancient times to today. The “Herbs and Spices of the Bible” presentation will explore how common seasonings were used in the Bible: their roles in healing, seasoning and rituals, as well as learning about their modern uses. This program is free and open to the public. The event will take place at Citizens Library at 55 S. College St., Washington, Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m.
Free community church dinner
The California United Methodist Church warmly invites all local residents and neighbors to its monthly free community dinner on Oct. 7, 6 to 7 p.m. at the Church Social Hall, 227 Third Street, California. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. This month’s featured menu is ham and sweet potatoes, hosted in a welcoming environment for all. While the primary entree and sides are provided at no cost, attendees are welcome to bring a favorite side dish or dessert to share with the table. Animal blessing
The First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon, located at 501 Fayette Avenue in Rostraver Township, will hold its 11th annual blessing of the animals on Oct. 3 at 10 a.m., rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held inside the church. All pets welcome! We will be collecting monetary donations or pet food to benefit Mon Valley Paws. Church fun run
Riverview Baptist Church at 405 Main Street, New Eagle, will host a fun run on Oct. 10, a free race for the whole family (5K/1K) along Main Street in New Eagle. Medals will be given to the first 50 5K and first 25 1K participants to register. Register online at runsignup.com/Race/PA/NewEagle/RiverviewFunRun or at the church by 9:45 p.m. on the day of the race. A parent or guardian must sign a release waiver for racers under age 18.
Meat shoot
Raccoon Valley Sportsman’s Club will host a meat shoot and a barbecue chicken dinner on Oct. 10. Sign-up for the meat shoot is at 11 a.m., and the shoot begins at noon. The barbecue chicken dinner is a $20.00 donation, and it will run from noon to 4 p.m.
Craft fair
There will be a craft fair at the Morris Township Community Center, 1713 Browns Creek Road, Nineveh, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 10. Lunch is available to purchase from the Morris Township Fire Department.
Craft show
The South Park Women’s Club is sponsoring its annual craft show on Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Broughton Fire Hall, 1030 Cochrans Mill Road in South Park. Admission and parking are free. This show, featuring more than skilled crafters, promises a wide variety of unique, homemade crafts. In addition, there will be a bake sale, chance auction and raffles. There will be a variety of refreshments and drinks to purchase — either for lunch or to take home. Proceeds from the show benefit the club’s ongoing community activities and scholarships.
