Walk of Hope raises more than $13,000
More than 100 community members gathered last month at Palmer Park in Donora for the Lois Orange Ducoeur Walk of Hope, raising more than $13,000 to support cancer care at Penn Highlands Mon Valley.
For the first time, the annual event expanded its mission beyond breast cancer awareness to recognize and support individuals affected by all types of cancer. The proceeds will directly benefit local patients and their families, helping ensure continued access to high-quality cancer care and support services close to home.
“Seeing our community come together in such a meaningful way is truly inspiring,” said Sam Vida, CNP, fund development specialist at Penn Highlands Healthcare. “We are grateful to everyone who joined us to support one another, remember those we have lost, walk beside those who are fighting and celebrate those who have won their battle. The generosity and compassion shown by our participants, sponsors and volunteers make a lasting difference for patients and families in our community.”
The Sept. 12 event featured a one-mile walk, three dozen raffle baskets, a 50/50 drawing and memorial ribbon sales. Attendees also enjoyed breakfast, refreshments and a visit from the Lavish Lemon lemonade truck.
Speakers included Debra Burkhardt, director of radiation oncology at Penn Highlands Mon Valley; Rodney Jamil, MD, oncologist and hematologist with Penn Highlands Oncology/Hematology – Mon Valley; and Lauren Altemara, medical records director at Penn Highlands Mon Valley, who shared her personal cancer journey. Their remarks highlighted the importance of cancer care, the strength of patients and survivors and the power of community support.
