Pantry distribution
Community Circle Food Pantry, in partnership with Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, has supplemental food box distribution every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon for households with food insecurity. The pantry is located on East Cherry Avenue, adjacent to Citizens Library. A food donation box is available after pantry drop-offs for your convenience.
Hoagie sale canceled
Claysville Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary’s September hoagie sale has been canceled due to the Labor Day holiday. The fundraiser will return in October.
California dinner
The California United Methodist Church invites the local community to its monthly Free Community Dinner at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2. This month will be a taco night. To create a community-style dining experience, attendees are invited to bring a variety of side dishes or desserts to share, though the main meal is provided at no cost. Both longtime residents and newcomers are welcome to gather and enjoy a hot meal at no cost. Doors open at 5:45. The church social hall is located at 227 Third St., directly across from Dairy Queen. Meadow Lands Food Pantry
Meadow Lands Food Pantry, 300 W. Pike St., announces an updated schedule for the pantry: Sept. 26, Oct. 24, Nov. 21 and Dec. 19. Hours are 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Executive director Rich Wingertsahn noted that the food pantry board of directors voted to continue their relationship with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. “The GPCFB has been a wonderful partner for us, and we see no reason to change this.”
AAUP meeting
The Association of University People welcomes singles 55 and over who are four-year college graduates to join them for various activities and meet new friends. Events include happy hour, brunches, lunches, dinners, meet-ups at live music venues and local wineries, picnics, a unique book group and day trips. Guide to knee injuries
The UPMC Cameron Wellness Center is hosting a free community event, “From Prevention to Recovery – The Athlete’s Guide to Knee Injuries.” The seminar features Dr. Steven Magister, UPMC orthopedic surgeon; master trainer Jackson Momplaisir, and Dr. David Gregg, physical therapist. The event, scheduled for 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 1, is intended for athletes, coaches, parents, and trainers of all abilities and ages. Space is limited; participants are asked to register at the front desk of the wellness center or online.
Chicken and biscuit dinner
There will be a chicken and biscuit dinner at Liberty Chapel, 1330 Banetown Road, Washington, on Sept. 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations will support missions and outreach programs. Please also bring a non-perishable food item for the Community Circle Food Pantry in Washington.
Garden Club meeting
Giant Oaks Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting Sept. 3 at St. David’s, 905 McMurray Road. Lunch and the meeting will be at 11:15 a.m.; the program will be at 1 p.m. Nick Baldauf, entomologist and environmental specialist with Vector Control and the Allegheny County Health Dept., will provide valuable information about ticks and mosquitoes. He will explain how to protect people, pets and yards. He will also share information about Lyme disease. Guests are welcome at the lunch and program. The luncheon fee is $6 for guests. Tinsel garden luncheon
Giant Oaks Garden Club has a limited number of tickets available for its highly popular annual Tinsel luncheon and fundraiser on Oct. 30. The theme of this year’s event is Glitter and Glow. Tinsel will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn at Southpointe. Tickets are $50 per person and include a luncheon, a full day of vendor shopping, lavish raffle baskets, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. The raffle baskets are valued at a minimum of $100, with many exceeding that value. Tickets are limited. Contact Diana at 412-417-3957.
Pantry donations
Liberty Chapel Global Methodist Church, at 1330 Banetown Road, Washington, collects non-perishable food products for the Community Circle Food Pantry on the first Saturday of each month between 9 a.m. and noon. Donations will be unloaded upon arrival.
Church fitness classes
Fitness classes at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2040 Washington Road, Upper St. Clair, start Sept. 7. Barre sculpt, cardio strength fusion, cardio drumming flow and gentle yoga, faith and fitness, Parkinson’s fitness, pickleball for Parkinson’s, Pilates, Stronger Bones/Better Balance, Tai Chi and Zumba, morning and evening.
Coin club meeting
The monthly meeting of the South Hills Coin Club will be held Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bethel Park municipal building located at 5100 West Library Ave. All members and the general public are invited. This month’s program will be on pattern dollars. A 50/50 will be offered, and children’s prizes will be awarded. Membership applications are now being accepted. Paws in the Park
Mon Valley Paws will host a Paws in the Park and vendor show at the walking track at the city park in Monessen, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 12. This is a rain-or-shine event. There will be food trucks, vendors (pet and non-pet), a DJ, flash tattoos, a kids zone, a balloon artist, face painting, a caricature artist, yoga, pet photos, pet contests, doggie races, K-9 demos, a blessing of the pets, raffles and a basket auction. Bring any pet food item and be entered to win a Pet Supplies Plus $50 gift card. Michael’s Ovation will be on site with the Michael Shaffer Pet Memorial Bridge, Pet Supplies Plus Shelter and Rescue Village will have adoptable pets from the four partnered shelters and rescues. Shuttle bus service will run every 15 minutes from the Monessen High School parking lot to the walking track. Transportation begins at 9 a.m. and runs through 3 p.m. Gift bags for the first 100 registered pets. Check the website, monvalleypaws.com, for a complete schedule of events.
Mon Valley Paws meeting
Mon Valley Paws will host a general meeting on Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. at the ISMA Italian Club, 112 Seventh St., Monessen. All chairpersons, coordinators and event chairpersons will report on the progress of their committees and projects for the upcoming year. This meeting is open to the public. Dine and donate event
The next dine and donate day for Mon Valley Paws will take place at La’Eda’s Restaurant, 1723 Grand Blvd., Monessen. La’Eda’s will share a portion of the sales from 4 to 8 p.m. with Mon Valley Paws. Mon Valley Paws volunteers will be on hand with a basket auction and to spread the word about MVP’s impact. Persons donating a pet food product will be entered into a drawing to win a Pet Supplies Plus gift card.
Craft show
A Joy of Christmas craft show will be held at Louise de Marillac School and LeGras Parish Center, 320 McMurray Road, Upper St. Clair, on Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There will be 113 artists and crafters, a bake sale, a crafts raffle and a 50/50 raffle. Lunch and snacks will be available for purchase. Admission is $2, which includes a complimentary ticket for the crafts raffle. By the order of the Upper St. Clair Fire Marshall, strollers are not permitted inside the show.
