This image of Trinity Area School District’s Logpile School is dated March 7, 1961. Logpile School, Canton Township, was constructed in 1915 and closed in the 1980s. This photo accompanied an article about the closure of one-room school houses, and touted the renovation and expansion of Logpile School and Wolfdale Elementary.

Morningside School in Washington, shown here in 1961, was purchased on March 4, 1961, by F. and J. Land Company. According to a March 11, 1961, article in the Washington Observer, “records kept by the Washington County Superintendent of Schools” said that Morningside was opened in 1906, though there were indications that students were being taught there prior to that year. Its students were transferred to the Hayes Avenue School.

Today’s schools are multi-million dollar behemoths, complete with STEAM labs at the elementary level and high schools that rival some college campuses. Since the time for back to school is upon us, we dug into our archives to find images of schools from the simpler era of reading, writing and arithmetic.
