An Amwell Township man surrendered peacefully to state police Wednesday following a two-hour standoff at his home, where police were called after he allegedly threatened to kill his wife and her family.

District Judge Ethan Ward remanded Andrew J. “Mio” Veltri Jr., 59, to the Washington County jail on $100,000 bond after police took him into custody about 1 p.m. at 174 Courson Hill Road and charged him with making terroristic threats, court records show.

Police said they summoned a regional Special Emergency Response Team to the residence after Veltri refused to come out at 11 a.m.

His wife, Tammy Veltri, had called Washington County 911 to report the threat, saying her husband had a small handgun and used it to threaten her in the past, police stated in affidavits filed in the case. She told 911 her husband had been smoking marijuana and was experiencing mental problems.

A police dispatcher then called Andrew Veltri, urging him to leave the residence, and he responded by saying “it would be a tragedy” if police approached his house, the record shows.

Ward issued police a search warrant to enter the house to look for and seize weapons and drugs.
