Small Games of Chance news conference planned
State Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-California, other local state legislators and individuals from local veterans organizations, fire departments and other organizations will hold a news conference at noon Friday at the Donora American Legion, 513 Meldon Ave., to discuss the impacts on local organizations of changes made to Pennsylvania’s Small Games of Chance law and efforts to repeal those changes.
Daley, who introduced legislation to repeal the changes to the law (H.B. 2649), said that he has heard from numerous organizations and many of them are worried that the changes could lead to the organization closing.
“I conducted a petition campaign earlier this year, and in less than a month’s time, gathered more than 3,000 signatures in opposition to these changes,” Daley said. “Since then, I’ve had requests from more organizations across Pennsylvania that want to send a message to Harrisburg that these changes will have severe financial consequences on their group.
“My legislation will repeal the act, which as we’ve learned since the passage of the new law, wasn’t properly vetted with local organizations. By repealing the act, we will allow time for all stakeholders to come to the table and work out changes that will accomplish the original intent of the updates to the law – to help organizations to raise the money they need to not only keep their doors open, but to continue to do good works in the community.”
Because the legislative session ends Friday, Daley said he plans to re-introduce his legislation in 2013.
