Avella man involved in crash facing charges
An Avella man was charged Monday by Cecil Township police in connection with a March 17 crash on Route 50 near the township building.
Township police were on patrol when they saw a vehicle driven by Robert Lee Camp Jr., 22, of 89 Gardner St., Avella, traveling west at a high rate of speed. The officer started to pursue the vehicle and then spotted vehicle parts on the road near the township building.
Police then spotted the car they had tried to stop pulling out from the building’s parking lot and heading west, again at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was smoking and leaking fluid. Camp pulled over about a mile away.
Police determined his vehicle had spun and struck a fire hydrant. The car then crossed the road and went off the eastbound side, hitting three bushes at the township building and almost hitting a fence.
Camp’s blood alcohol level was more than 2 1/2 times the 0.08 percent limit presumed for intoxication. Charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of a crash, failure to yield to an officer and traffic violations were filed at the office of District Judge Valarie Costanzo.
