Compressor site cleanup in progress

2 min read

WAYNESBURG – Franklin Township supervisors heard complaints last month about noise and the unsightly condition of Dominion Transmission Inc.’s Crayne compressor station on Route 188.

Supervisor Reed Kiger reported at Monday’s meeting that the company has begun cleaning up the site. Garbage has been picked up and the trailers are being removed, he said. “It looks a lot better.”

Residents had complained about the unkempt condition of the property as well as the noise created when a “blow off” occurs. The supervisors have asked the company to inform residents when a planned blow off is to take place; however, it was noted some blow offs occur to prevent emergency situations and can’t be predicted.

The supervisors heard from Helen Gump of Willow Drive who thanked the supervisors for doing a good job at keeping the roads plowed this winter.

She also asked whether the township had a burning ordinance. The supervisors said they do have an ordinance.

The burning ordinance allows people to burn only wood and wood-related products such as cardboard and paper. People are prohibited from burning garbage, tires or other materials.

According to township code enforcement officer Steve Coss, burning is allowed between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. The person burning also must call 911 to inform them about it.

Kiger also asked residents to make sure they have their street numbers posted in plain view on their houses so if there is an emergency fire and ambulance crews can find their house.

“A lot of people have them, but there are also a lot who do not,” he said. Having people put numbers on their houses “is for their own safety.”

The supervisors will hold a cleanup day May 18. From 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., residents can bring unwanted items to the municipal building.

This year, the township has made accommodations so residents also can drop off electronic items, including computers and monitors, televisions, microwaves and cellular telephones.

Certain items cannot be accepted. They include tires, oil, paint and combustible liquids. Air-conditioning units and refrigerators also must be tagged indicating the Freon has been removed.
