Meeting on mining planned Thursday

1 min read

The Center for Coalfield Justice will hold an informational meeting titled “Mining – Do You Know Your Rights?” from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Buffalo Township building, 400 Buffalo Center Lane.

Veronica Coptis, community organizer for the center, said the session is in response to a letter some township residents have received from Consol Energy Inc. related to possible future mining. She said the letter precedes any pretesting and presurveying a company would do before applying for permits.

Coalfield Justice attorneys and staff will be on hand to address concerns and list precautions that residents may take to protect their land and water from subsidence damage resulting from longwall mining.

A similar meeting drew an audience of about 50 April 4 in South Franklin Township.

The center, a watchdog organization based in downtown Washington, deals with environmental issues related to fossil fuel extraction. Coal is one of its major focuses.

The regular meeting of the Buffalo Creek Watershed Association will follow the information session about 8 p.m.
