Victims of Akron flood assessing damage
AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Some flood damage in an Akron neighborhood swamped in a water-main break could be irreparable.
The Akron Beacon Journal reported Saturday that a boil alert remained effective in suburban Copley and Fairlawn and areas of west Akron where the 36-inch pipeline break on Thursday submerged cars, trapped residents and washed away foundations.
One of 33 houses involved has been ruled uninhabitable and may be destroyed. Other repairs will be time-consuming.
Akron Service Director John Moore said an engineering inspection determined the exposed foundation of Extrusion Services’ manufacturing facility can be saved.
The newspaper reports three families spent a night at a nearby American Red Cross shelter before being allowed to return home.
Moore said he “couldn’t even begin to guess” the amount of total damage from the flood.
