Route 188 detour set

2 min read

WAYNESBURG – Motorists who travel Route 188 between Waynesburg and Jefferson will have to follow a new detour as the state Department of Transportation repairs a slide just east of Valley Farm Drive.

The new detour is Route 21, Route 88 and Route 188, according to Valerie Peterson, spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation. Message boards have been set up to indicate the new detour route, she said.

The new detour was established Monday when crews began repairing a slide on Route 188 between Valley Farm Road and the eastern end of Strope Road.

Passenger vehicles also can use Route 221 and Route 19, or Interstate 79; however, Route 221 has a 10-ton weight limit and can’t be used by heavy trucks, Peterson said.

Another detour has been in effect on Route 188 since April 1 when work started to replace a small bridge behind the Greene County Fairgrounds. That work involved the closing of Route 188 to through traffic between the Sheetz at Bill George Drive and Elm Drive.

Traffic was detoured onto Route 21 and Elm Drive. That detour will remain in use for access to the Humane Society shelter on Route 188 and for local traffic on Valley Farm Drive. However, it will not work for those on Route 188 heading east of Valley Farm Drive because of the slide repairs.

Work on the slide repairs is expected to be completed the end of May, Petersen said. The replacement of the bridge behind the fairgrounds is expected to be finished by the end of July.
