Commissioners recognize Relay, abuse prevention

3 min read

WAYNESBURG – Greene County commissioners made two proclamations during their regular meeting Thursday.

The commissioners proclaimed May 3 as Paint Greene County Purple Day, supporting the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Greene County May 4-5 at the Waynesburg Central High School Raider Field of Pride. Purple is the official color of Relay For Life.

“We are so thankful for the support of the commissioners and Greene County as a whole,” said Jacki Headlee, Relay For Life of Greene County event chair. “The people of Greene County have big hearts, and each year, they have given of their time and talents.”

The Greene County Relay will serve as an enrollment site for Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3), a long-term, nationwide research study designed to find links between cancer diagnoses and lifestyle, environmental, genetic and other factors.

Also, April was proclaimed Child Abuse Prevention. The proclamation acknowledges that child abuse is the leading cause of out-of-home placements in Greene County, and encourages the community to help protect children from physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

Amy Jo Metz, Children and Youth Services intake/abuse caseworker supervisor, thanked the commissioners for their support and reported that during the past year, CYS has responded to 107 reports of child abuse, including 69 physical abuse cases, 37 sexual abuse cases, and one emotional abuse case.

As expected, the commissioners entered into a new three-year contract with Maximus, a consultant the county has used for about the last 10 years to assess the value of the county’s rental space.

The company determines the value of rental space, taking into account square footage, utilities and other information. The information is particularly important in writing grants, and the county’s domestic relations program, for instance, includes in its grant applications the value of the space in occupies in the county’s Fort Jackson building. The values also are used for space the county leases directly to others, such as Pennsylvania CareerLink in the same building.

The three-year contract is for $21,900.

The commissioners also adopted an ordinance requiring a tax parcel number to be included on all conveyances of real estate, plans, mortgages, satisfactions and any other document affecting real estate.

The numbers are assigned by the assessment office and most of the documents received by the register and recorder’s office have the numbers and only a small percentage do not. The ordinance would address that issue.

The commissioners approved a progressive discipline policy and an exit interview policy. The policies will be included in the employee handbook.
