Elderly couple and son found dead in Westmoreland County

1 min read

IRWIN, Pa. (AP) — A coroner says an elderly western Pennsylvania couple and their son found shot to death were victims of an apparent murder-suicide, but says autopsies were ongoing to confirm that.

Westmoreland County Coroner Kenneth Bacha says the dead are 68-year-old Franklin Hutchison, his 67-year-old wife, Hazel, and their 47-year-old son, William.

The coroner says all three were found shot to death when police in North Huntingdon Township were asked to check on the couple’s welfare about 9:20 p.m. Thursday. The township is about 25 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Bacha tells The Associated Press authorities are “treating it at this time as a double-homicide-suicide.” Bacha says investigators believe they know who fired the shots, based on where the gun was found, but they’re waiting for autopsies to confirm that. Bacha didn’t describe the gun.
