PITTSBURGH (AP) — Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the archbishop of Washington, D.C., will give the commencement address at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where he was once bishop of western Pennsylvania’s largest Roman Catholic diocese.

Wuerl will also celebrate the Baccaulaureat Mass before the graduation ceremony on May 3 at the Catholic university’s A.J. Palumbo Center.

Wuerl served as Pittsburgh’s bishop for 18 years until he was made archbishop in Washington in 2006. Pope Benedict XVI elevated Wuerl to cardinal in 2010.

Nearly 1,600 students are set to graduate at the ceremony.

Wuerl taught theology at Duquesne while he was bishop in the city.
