Police: Charleroi man stole money from kids
A Charleroi man was arrested Saturday by Charleroi Regional police after he allegedly stole money from two young girls outside a business.
Stephen Vee Chestnut, 39, of 728 Lookout Ave., is accused of stealing the money from the two girls, ages 5 and 9, outside the Dollar General store.
Wanetta Scagline told police the older girl had two $20 bills in her jacket pocket. When the money fell out of the jacket, the 5-year-old picked up the cash to hand it back. Chestnut allegedly grabbed the money and ran down the street.
Scagline, who knows Chestnut, provided police with his name, and they were able to locate him.
Charleroi police Officer Michael Kresich said the older girl was Scagline’s granddaughter, and the other girl was a family friend. The three had been shopping.
Court records indicate Chestnut has a lengthy criminal history. He most recently pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia in connection with a 2012 incident.
Chestnut was arraigned before District Judge David Mark on charges of robbery and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Washington County jail on $25,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Monday before District Judge Larry Hopkins.
