DEP: Man hurt at Bailey Mine in stable condition
A 35-year-old man doing contract work at the Crabapple Portal of Consol Energy’s Bailey Mine in Richhill Township is in stable condition at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., after being seriously injured about 3:30 a.m. Monday, according to John Poister, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
Poister said the accident happened when the man, whose named has not yet been released, was working as part of a five-member crew loading a rock dust skid onto a supply car.
The crew consisted of three employees of GMS Mine Repair and Maintenance of Mt. Lake, Md., and two miners employed at Bailey Mine, according to Poister.
“When they were loading the skid on the supply car, the accident occurred and he was pinned. He was brought to the surface and flown by Stat Medevac to Ruby Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery around 6:30 a.m.,” Poister said. “What we know is that he suffered a fractured pelvis and had multiple internal injuries. There was a considerable amount of bleeding.”
Poister said the accident is under investigation by the Bureau of Mine Safety, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, GMS and Consol Energy.
