West Virginia man faces new charges

3 min read

A West Virginia man accused of kidnapping a 2-year-old girl from that state earlier this year and bringing her to Centerville, before stealing a van and leading police on a chase that ended in Allegheny County, faces charges filed by state police.

Timothy Adam White, 23, formerly of Morgantown, W.Va., was arraigned by video Tuesday before District Judge Joshua Kanalis on charges of false imprisonment, interference with custody of children, concealing whereabouts of a child, theft, carrying a firearm without a license, endangering the welfare of children and driving under the influence of marijuana. White is currently incarcerated, also on charges filed in connection with the Feb. 8 incident.

State police received a call about the abduction of the girl in Preston County, W.Va., and that the kidnapper, later identified as White, had been tracked through his cellphone to Richeyville. Troopers responded and learned the girl was with a good samaritan who offered to help after seeing White at a gas station with the girl. The vehicle White was in broke down on Interstate 79 near Lone Pine. Police later learned he and the girl started walking on the highway and were given rides by several people. He also placed a .22-caliber pistol on the side of the highway. The gun was later found by police.

The good samaritan, John Weid, told police White wanted to go to a nearby town. Weid was concerned White may have committed a crime and was running from police.

Weid took the child and White to his home. White got out of Weid’s vehicle, leaving behind the girl, and got into an Atlantic Broadband cable van and fled the area. State police on Toll 43 spotted the van after receiving a broadcast that it had been stolen. As the trooper got behind the van, it sped up and attempted to flee. White did several U-turns and eventually went north on Route 51 at a high speed in heavy traffic, forcing several vehicles off the road. He was eventually boxed in by police from several agencies in Baldwin.

White had to be forced on the ground to be taken into custody.

Last week, White pleaded guilty in a nonjury trial before Judge David R. Cashman on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude police, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest. Multiple counts of aggravated assault were withdrawn. He was sentenced to time served and placed on probation for three years.

A preliminary hearing on the new charges is set for Monday before Kanalis. Bond on the new charges is $250,000. White still faces charges in West Virginia.
