Date: Aug. 19

Action: The board unanimously granted permission to Dawson Geophysical Co. to conduct a seismic survey on the property of Wylandville Elementary School on behalf of Range Resources. Range will pay the district $500 for the test.

Discussion: Board members and Superintendent Michael Daniels gave plaques to the high school softball team, which won the 2013 PIAA Class AAAA state championship. The coaches were also recognized for having been named “North Region Coaching Staff of the Year” by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Horizon Foundation, a new nonprofit created to match up donors and recipients in the district, gave a presentation about its goals. The organization’s mission statement is “to connect the financial material and social resources of the Canon-McMillan community and the Canon-McMillan School District for the benefit of the students and for the benefit of the community.”

Date: Aug. 16

Action: The board approved a supplement of $17,704 to its contract with HRG Inc. for the Daisytown Bridge over Pike Run in California. Eighty percent of the total contract amount of $352,486 will be paid by state taxpayers while 20 percent will come from the county’s liquid fuels allocation.

At the request of Gary Bertosh, director of building and grounds, the commissioners approved $295,967 for the preparation and installation of a natural gas generator from Schultheis Electric and the installation of the gas line for $5,000 to the generator from Combustion Services to provide emergency power to the courthouse. The money is coming from Act 13 Marcellus Shale impact fees. Also included in the contract is $25,735 to Schultheis to tie into the elevator and fire alarm systems.

The county will contract with attorneys Frank C. Kocevar and Erin Dickerson to provide legal service and counsel to children who are involved with the county Children and Youth Services agency. The attorneys will be paid $2,916 per month for the contract, which is effective July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014.

For the juvenile probation department, the commissioners ratified the purchase of a 2014 GMC all-wheel-drive van at a cost of $23,549 from Bob Fisher Chevrolet Inc. of Reading, Berks County. For the district attorney’s office, the board ratified the purchase of a 2014 Ford Taurus sedan from Day Ford, Monroeville, at an approximate cost of $22,000. For the public safety department, the board approved the purchase of a 2013 Hackney truck with International cab and chassis from D.T. Hackney at a cost of $192,483, to be used to carry supplies to a chemical or fuel spill cleanups. It will replace an older vehicle, which will be auctioned. All are being made through state contracts that do not require bidding, and the truck is being paid for by Act 13 Marcellus Shale impact fees.

The commissioners ratified the previous purchase of $385,000 of a hangar that had been owned by Air Charter at the Washington County Airport. The state Bureau of Aviation asked the board to note that the property changed hands by agreement and in lieu of condemnation.

William Lee was appointed to the veterans advisory council for a three-year term.

Discussion: All county offices will be closed Sept. 2 for Labor Day.
