Ringgold seeks options for selling closed district schools

1 min read

NEW EAGLE – Ringgold School Board on Wednesday agreed to seek proposals from realtors for the sale of closed elementary schools in Donora and Monongahela.

The decision was reached in a 5-3 vote at the district administration building in New Eagle as directors also consider selling the aging buildings through the bidding process or at auction.

The majority of the board wants to sell the buildings, but has not yet decided on which method to offer them on the market, Ringgold Superintendent Karen Polkabla said.

The buildings, which were closed nearly three years ago, were at the center of a heated battle on the board for the past two years over whether to keep them empty or reopen them as middle schools. The November election, however, is expected to seat more directors in support of selling the buildings and moving forward with construction of a new middle school when state funding can be obtained for the project.

The buildings have been appraised at $110,000 for the Donora school and $150,000 for the one in Monongahela, prices that were much lower than the board expected.
