BURGETTSTOWN – Dr. Deborah Jackson, Burgettstown School District superintendent, announced her retirement at last week’s school board meeting. The board voted to approve Jackson’s retirement, effective Feb. 28.

“I’ve spent 16 years in the district,” Jackson said, “and it’s been a wonderful experience for me.”

Jackson has been serving the district since she was hired as the high school principal in 1997. She has been the superintendent for the last 10 academic years.

She said she has had a wonderful time working with the families and municipalities in the district, which include Burgettstown, Hanover, Jefferson and Smith townships.

“I want to thank the students, parents and community members for their support and cooperation during my time as principal and superintendent,” Jackson said.

During the meeting, the board approved David Palmer, previously the principal of the middle/high school, as assistant superintendent. Michael Wright moved from assistant principal to principal at the middle/high school building.

Brian Fadden, previously a math teacher at Union High School in Lawrence County, was hired to the assistant principal position.

Jackson said the board had not made the decision as to who would replace her once she retires in February.

Also during the school board meeting, the date of this year’s Kennywood picnic was set for May 30, 2014.
