Western Pa. township OKs site for gas-fueled power plant

NEW CASTLE, Pa. (AP) — A New Jersey firm has received approval from a western Pennsylvania township to build a 900-megawatt, $750 million natural gas-fired power plant.

LS Power Development, which has offices in East Brunswick, N.J. and St. Louis, is pursuing the plant under the name Hickory Run Energy.

Supervisors in North Beaver Township, Lawrence County, on Monday approved a condition use permit for the site of a former explosives manufacturing plant owned by American Cyanamid Co. about 45 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

LS Power officials say the plant will create 500 construction jobs for two years and 25 full-time plant jobs and is needed to replace an existing plant in West Pittsburg set to close in 2015.

The company plans to fuel the plant with gas from a nearby Marcellus Shale pipeline.
