Bomb threat forces evacuation
MAPLETOWN – The Mapletown Junior-Senior High School was evacuated Tuesday morning after a school secretary was delivered a note indicating a bomb was set to go off inside the building.
A state police K-9 trained to detect explosives was brought in to search the school. Nothing was found, state police said.
A male juvenile was later taken into custody and admitted writing the note, police said. He also admitted no explosive device was present in the building.
The note was found about 9 a.m. District Superintendent William Henderson said a student had found the note and turned it into the office. The note indicated a bomb was set to go off at 12:35 p.m., police said.
“We followed our crisis plan and evacuated the building,” Henderson said. Students were taken to a public building used by the district as the school’s evacuation site, he said.
The students were at the evacuation site for about an hour and a half to two hours while a search of the school was conducted, Henderson said. They returned to the building about 11 a.m. once everything was determined to be safe.
“Everything went as well as possible,” Henderson said. “The teachers did a nice job, the students were well behaved and state police came and took care of the situation.”
Police arrived quickly, Henderson said. He was happy with their response.
The juvenile, whom Henderson said is a student, was charged with felony charges of terroristic threats and risking a catastrophe. He was turned over to Greene County Juvenile Probation and taken to a secure juvenile facility, police said.
