Injured miner still in Pittsburgh hospital

1 min read

A coal miner injured Thursday night at Consol Energy’s Enlow Fork mine remained in stable condition at a Pittsburgh hospital.

Lynn Seay, Consol’s director of media relations, would not name the injured man but said Tuesday he was being taken out of the intensive care unit of UPMC-Presbyterian hospital and that his condition had been upgraded.

The miner sustained multiple injuries when he became entangled in a continuous mine conveyor, a machine used to cut coal, at the company’s West Finley mine.

The miner was conscious when he was brought to the surface about 8 p.m. and treated by emergency medical personnel before being flown by helicopter to the hospital, said Seay.

The incident is being investigated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Its district manager, Thomas Light, said he did not know how long the investigation would take. It will involve examining and testing the equipment to see if it is in safe working order as well as interviewing witnesses who were either there or may have relevant information to help MSHA get to the root cause of the accident.

Seay said the company is working with MSHA on the investigation.
