County settles lawsuit

1 min read

Washington County anticipates settling for $5,000 a suit against a trucking company over a wreck last year that damaged a one-lane bridge in Mingo Creek County Park.

The commissioners, at their meeting Thursday, expect to vote on the matter centering on the Feb. 29 accident on the Chapel Hill bridge.

A box truck exceeding the 3-ton posted limit was delivering a load to a location on Route 136 when the driver’s global-positioning system led him to Chapel Hill Road, the driver told a park employee. The truck hit the bridge, a stop sign and a guardrail.

The bridge had to be closed for repairs, which cost county taxpayers between $12,000 and $14,000.

The attorney representing Wooster Motor Ways Inc. claimed the bridge was structurally deficient before the truck driver attempted to cross it.

The county bridge department plans to replace the bridge in 2015, and designs have been completed.
