District prepares for work on school
ROGERSVILLE – West Greene School Board voted Thursday to advertise for bids for work that will be done this summer on the middle-senior high school renovation project.
Renovations at the school began last summer and will continue this year with the installation of a new heating and air conditioning system, electrical work and renovations to the kitchen, office of student services and the south wing’s second floor.
The second floor of the south wing will eventually be designated for fifth- and sixth-grade classes after the new elementary addition is constructed.
Because of the amount of work that will be done, the district is considering closing the school completely for the summer, Superintendent Thelma Szarell said following the meeting.
In preparation for the work, the board voted to purchase heating and air conditioning equipment that must be ordered in advance.
The board awarded a contract for the equipment to McQuay International. The company’s bid of $76,000 was second lowest. The lowest bid had to be disqualified because it did not meet specifications.
The board also authorized the engineering firm Skelly and Loy to advertise for bids for asbestos abatement and to serve as environmental engineering monitor during the construction, at a cost not to exceed $18,556.
The board also authorized Szarell to enter into an agreement with West Penn Power to relocate electrical lines behind the middle-senior high at a cost not to exceed $75,000.
Work that was completed last summer at the middle-senior high as part of the renovation included electrical and plumbing work, roof repairs at the middle school gym, roof replacement over the band room, replacement of the emergency generator and exterior doors and renovation of the band room.
The district also is completing repairs to the floor and replacing seats in the auditorium, a project expected to begin next month.
In other business, the board hired Gregory Carey as director of facilities at a salary of $50,000. The board voted in October not to extend the contract of the previous director of facilities, Mike Pierson.
The board also appointed Chelsey Holloway head varsity girls volleyball coach and head seventh- and eighth-grade girls volleyball coach.
