Fort Cherry awaits decision on voting districts
Voters in Fort Cherry School District will have to wait a bit longer to find out whether school directors will be elected on an at-large or regional basis.
Attorneys for the school district and more than 300 district voters appeared Friday before Washington County Judge John DiSalle.
The school district is asking the court to approve its reapportionment plan to realign parts of McDonald, Mt. Pleasant Township and Midway-Robinson in an effort to balance each area’s population within 100 residents for school board election purposes.
Three school directors are chosen from each region to comprise the nine-member board.
According to the district’s petition, the Mt. Pleasant region now has at least 700 more voters than the other regions. The board is seeking to put the 3rd Ward of the Midway-Robinson region into the McDonald region and the Primrose portion of Mt. Pleasant into the Midway-Robinson region.
“The boundaries of each region would then nearly have equal composite and compatible boundaries,” the petition reads.
The opposition, led by James D. White of Hickory, contends that an at-large system would be a more equitable means of voting.
Attorneys were given 10 days to file written briefs for consideration by DiSalle before he renders a decision.
